Miriam Rivera dusted the powder from a remodeling job off a chair and apologized, even though the 1939 ranch-style house tucked in an elegant and woodsy patch of Silicon Valley still looked immaculate.
"Sometimes I wonder if we'll ever finish," said Rivera, who then sat for a light breakfast of fresh fruit and chocolate milk on a patio, which opens nicely to a yard featuring a treehouse and giant rocks from Indonesia.
For someone who sparkled in high-tech as a premier dealmaker for Google, the new member of Stanford University's Board of Trustees — and the second Latina on the governing body — prefers "rustic, handmade furniture and artifacts'' to the modern, machine-made stuff.
